Spring 2000 Bulletin

Albuquerque Office Opens

After five years on the wish list, and many conversations and planning sessions, Amigos Bravos has opened a satellite office in Albuquerque. This move, which has been made possible by grants from the Beldon Fund and the General Service Foundation, represents another major beachhead in our efforts to accomplish our mission.

Cynthia Gomez, a lifetime resident of Albuquerque, community activist, and educator will head-up the new office which will be located at 925 Sixth Street (corner of Sixth and Granite) in downtown Albuquerque. In addition to broadening our constituency in Albuquerque, Cynthia will be working to help accomplish the goals of the Alliance for the Rio Grande Heritage, as well as directing the Somos Vecinos and Oral History projects. This summer, our Oral History intern will assist Cynthia in conducting oral histories aimed at collecting information about the takeover by the Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District of the old acequias system from Bernalillo to Soccoro.

Opening an Albuquerque office will have fundamental and far-reaching consequences in futhering our mission, broadening our grassroots constituency, and implementing direct action. The Albuquerque office will provide an exponential increase in our capacity to effect change by galvanizing action on issues such as saving the cottonwood bosque and the Endangered Río Grande silvery minnow. In addition, the new office will facilitate our active participation in the Río Grande Silvery Minnow Recovery Plan, as well as provide Amigos Bravos with easy access to the federal agencies (Bureau of Reclamation, Army Corps of Engineers, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service) that control water flows and are key to restoring the Río Grande.

We are very excited about our new office and staff, and hope that you will stop by and visit. In the months ahead, look for an invitation to an open house and other Amigos Bravos events in Albuquerque.
