RIO: “Recognize It’s Ours” Produces
River Anthology CD

On an unusually warm Thursday evening in mid-February, a community of poets, artists, musicians and river supporters packed Java Joe’s, a local coffee shop in downtown Albuquerque, to celebrate the release of RIO: “Recognize It’s Ours”, A River Anthology. More than 20 contributing artists came out to the release party to perform for the RIO group and its local supporters. The evening was a huge success, and we would like to thank all of the volunteers and contributors involved for making it possible.

The CD is a collaboration of spoken word and music, relating to the river and the influence it has on our lives, as well as our influence on it. Included are traditional New Mexican corridos, or story songs, as well as contemporary poetry mixed with music and sound effects. The CD was put together by the RIO group as part of a broad-based youth media campaign sponsored by the Alliance for the Rio Grande Heritage. The CD is the first phase of a three-part project; near completion is a portable river mural and a chap book to accompany the CD. The project’s goal is to inform a younger generation about the Río Grande; its predominance in cultural history, and its importance to the future of the entire Río Grande Community, from the headwaters to the Gulf. The youth hope to use RIO: “Recognize It’s Ours” to build an active and healthy community around the river, encouraging restoration of the river, cultural use, and clean water initiatives.

The group has continued to promote the CD at events like Earth Day at the La Montanita Co-op in Albuquerque’s Nob Hill area. The Rio Grande Bosque Initiative Conference at the Hispanic Cultural Center in Albuquerque played host to the RIO group on May 14, incorporating the mural and spoken word performances into the opening ceremony. Carlos Martin, a member of the RIO Core Group, also traveled to North Carolina on May 17 with a presentation for the 2002 River Rally, sponsored by the River Network. Other events will be scheduled throughout the summer to influence river awareness among the youth in the community. To find out where RIO will be next, or to invite them to an event, please call the Amigos Bravos office in Albuquerque (505) 924-2223.
