Mark Your Calenders for the March 14, 1999 "International Day of Action Against Dams: for Rivers, Water & Life." This annual international movement began in Brazil but has spread throughout the world to embrace the broader importance of rivers to all our lives. Join tens of thousands of people in a day of global action on behalf of our rivers. Look for river-related activities taking place in your area, lend a hand in cleaning your local acequia, write or call your state legislators about important river legislation, or take your own action on behalf of rivers. "¡Agua para la vida, no para la muerte! Water for life, not for death!"

Lend a Hand! Amigos Bravos Seeks Volunteer/Intern help with all our ongoing technical research on a range of issues, along with the deluge of Molycorp permits coming down the pike. It's an opportunity to learn a lot and help us with some critical projects in the process.

We are looking for individuals with at least a Bachelor's Degree, and some experience or knowledge of mine reclamation, hydrogeology, stream hydrology, or aquatic biology, to help us read and analyze technical documents. We also seek help researching and setting up a volunteer directory to provide us with a pool of experts to call on when needed.

Contact our office for more information. Remember, "when spiders get together, they can tie down a lion" (Ethiopian proverb).

A Short Course on Groundwater Hydrology and Contaminant Transport will be offered April 6-8, 1999 at the Holiday Inn/Don Fernando de Taos. The course is organized by the Picuris Pueblo Environment Department and co-sponsored by Amigos Bravos and the Mineral Policy Center. There is no tuition charge. Participants would find some science background useful. The course will be of particular interest to state, federal, and tribal employees, as well as private citizens involved with groundwater issues. For more information, contact Picuris Environment Dept., PO Box 127, Penasco, NM 87553. Tel: 587-0110, fax 587-1071
